Training Modules

NSNs and the SDR

NSNs (National Student Numbers) must be included for every student reported to the Ministry of Education in a Single Data Return (SDR). Points to note are:

-  A date of birth is required to create an NSN. Type C and D students are required to provide a date of birth at enrolment, and Type D students must have a verified date of birth.

-  A proxy date of birth can be used for Type B students. This proxy should only be used for Type B enrolments where the date of birth is not known, or an associated NSI record does not already exist. The proxy date is 11/11/1918.

-  When running trial validations, the NSN cut-off date should be set to the date you run the trial. When you do your final validation, the cut-off date should be set to the date the trial validation was run with no NSN errors.

-  TEOs are encouraged to run trial SDR validations regularly as a means of checking and cleaning data (so that errors and warnings are reduced), and to help save time during SDR periods.

Note:

Type B students includes all STAR students and students enrolled in formal qualifications that have an EFTS value less than or equal to 0.03.

Type C students are enrolled in non-formal education for whom only limited data needs to be recorded for purposes of statistical reporting.

Type D students are all those enrolled in a formal qualification with an EFTS value greater than 0.03. They include Training Opportunities, Industry Training Organisation Off Job Training, Youth Training & Skill Enhancement students.
