To start looking for a student's NSN once you are logged into the NSI, you need to be in the Student Search screen. This screen is found by clicking on the search tab on the menu at the top left of the screen.

There are two different ways to search for a student:
- by National Student Number or
- by Name and other details
SEARCH BY NSN
The first and easiest way is to search with an NSN (National Student Number), as the NSI will be able to precisely return a student’s details because you’ve used a reference which is unique to them.
To search, enter the number in the NSN box and click search.

If the NSN entered is correct (i.e. a record with that number exists in the system), you’ll be taken straight to the details of the student found.
From here you may then choose to view the History of the record, or Modify the information you see.
SEARCH BY NAME OR OTHER DETAILS
If you do not know the student’s NSN, the second way to search is by using their name plus you can also use the optional criteria (such as Date of Birth, Gender or Residential Status). When searching by Name, if you enter two names (i.e. a forename and a surname) and a Date of Birth, the search will be quicker and return results with a higher degree of accuracy.

Having entered your search criteria, click search.
The screen will display the results as follows:

If you change your mind and want to search on a new student, or use a different search method, click "Reset" to clear all the fields on the screen and begin another search.
If you decide not to continue with the search, "Cancel" will take you back to the NSI Welcome screen.
If you wish to go to another module please use the appropriate tab on the menu bar above.
If you wish to go to another part of the "The National Student Index (NSI)" module, please select the part from the left hand menu.
