A student should only be added to the NSI once you are sure that an NSN for this student does not already exist.
In order to establish that a record does not already exist, you need to search for the student by name and other details, as described in How to search for a student.
Once you’ve done a search and are satisfied that there is no record for the student in the NSI, you can then add the student to the database, by clicking "Add Student" in the search results screen.

The Add Student screen opens with your search criteria already shown in the relevant fields, leaving you to fill in the blanks and click Save.

Note: You must enter valid data in both the Surname and Forenames fields, otherwise the system will not accept the name you are entering.
If a student wishes to be known by one name only (e.g. ‘Madonna’ or ‘Prince’), you can enter this into the Surname field, and then enter a ‘ ~’ (tilde) in the Forenames. The tilde is a special character that can be entered into Forenames in the NSI if the student has only one name. Note that the tilde can only be used on its own, and not in conjunction with any other characters.
To successfully save a new student record, you must enter valid data into at least the following fields: Forenames, Surname, and Date of Birth. This is easy to remember as these mandatory fields are indicated in red text with a * next to them on the screen.
Both Verification and Alternative Names can be a part of adding a new student. It is advised to read the information on these two areas in conjunction with this page.
