Teaching Matters Forum

The Teaching Matters Forum was set up by government to develop options for the establishment and governance of a National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence.  Forum members were drawn from representatives in the tertiary education sector supported by Ministry of Education policy staff.

The Ministry consulted widely with people interested in promoting tertiary teaching excellence and based its recommendations for the nature and governance of the proposed National Centre to Cabinet on feedback it received.  These documents are housed here.

-   Report to the Forum on the submissions (doc 551kb)

-   Table outlining recommendations and proposed response (doc 99kb),

-   The Forum’s final report and recommendations (doc 430kb)

     -   A set of questions and answers(doc 76kb)

The contract for the provision of services for the National Centre was won by a consortium of Massey University, AUT University, Manukau Institute of Technology, UCOL - Universal College of Learning and Canterbury University.

The establishment of the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence as an entity (now named Ako Aotearoa), dates from 27 October 2006 with the signing of a funding and service contract.

The Ministry of Education commissioned five research projects into factors relating to high quality teaching.  The research findings will be published on the Ministry of Education website and also disseminated by Ako Aotearoa.
