Service Promise for ICT Shared Services

Service Promise

A Service Promise (doc 101kb) has been developed to ensure all customers receive high quality services and effective communication from the Service Desk for the Shared Services.

Why do we have Shared Services?

The purpose of Shared Services is to provide every education organisation with the ability to share and gain access to ideas and resources electronically in a secure environment.

The ICT Strategic Framework for Education (PDF 190kb) was written to provide the mechanism to guide and coordinate ICT investment across the education sector to achieve the government’s vision of improved education outcomes. The overarching vision of the Strategic Framework is:

“to improve learner achievement in an innovative education sector, fully connected and supported by the smart use of ICT”.

This vision and the year 2010 targets outlined in the Strategic Framework will be achieved by delivering across three components - Connectivity, Content and Confidence and Capability.

Shared Services are a key deliverable of the Connectivity component of the Strategic Framework.

More information on Shared Services, their strategic context and other education sector ICT work can be found here.

What are the ICT Shared Services?

The education sector ICT shared services include:

  • Education Sector Authentication/Authorisation (ESAA)
ESAA is a single sign-on service for the education sector.  It provides administration, provisioning and support services for logons to systems that use ESAA.
  • Education Sector Federated Search (ESFS)
ESFS is a search brokerage service which connects to key sector and international electronic catalogues in order to provide a sole point of access to all educational related information.  Websites and portals connected to ESFS will be able to execute a search across all these catalogues and obtain better search results.
  • National Student Index (NSI)
The National Student Index (NSI) is a database system maintained by the Ministry of Education.  The system is used to allocate a unique identifier, a National Student Number (NSN), to every tertiary student and National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) candidate.
This unique identifier is used by Tertiary Education Organisations in their reporting to the Ministry of Education, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).
  • Single Data Return (SDR)
The Single Data Return (SDR) is a set of data items that are specifically required by the Ministry of Education and TEC for the purposes of funding students at TEOs and for statistical reporting requirements.
  • edCentre
The edCentre portal is an online gateway to information about New Zealand education.  It provides access to educational services and advice for organisations and people at all stages of their lives.
  • Virtual Learning Network
The Virtual Learning Network is a brokerage service that enables the establishment of online, networked learning environments across New Zealand schools and tertiary education organisations and beyond with the use of video conferencing and other technologies.
